Jan Latussek is a photographer and filmmaker specializing in maritime culture, shipbuilding, and ocean storytelling. With over 20 years of experience in documentary, commercial, and artistic visual work.

A Photographer Rooted in the Sea

My name is Jan, and my work revolves around the maritime world—not in racing or regattas, but in the quiet dedication of shipyards, the heritage of fishing communities, and the ever-evolving relationship between humans and the sea.

As Jules Verne’s Captain Nemo once declared, “Mobilis in Mobili”—moving within a moving element. Photography, like the sea, is never static. It requires presence, adaptability, and an intuitive understanding of motion and light. My work follows this philosophy: capturing maritime life in its perpetual state of change, preserving moments that would otherwise be lost to the waves.

I believe in photography as a means of preservation, storytelling, and tribute. My images aim to capture not only the visual beauty of maritime life but also its depth, history, and transformation.

I hold a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts with a specialization in Film Production from the American Film Institute, following a Licentiate in Communication Sciences from Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona. With over two decades of experience in the audiovisual industry, I have worked extensively in film and commercial production, shaping visual narratives for a wide range of brands and projects. My career has spanned directing, cinematography, and storytelling, blending high-end commercial work with a deep passion for documentary-style maritime photography.

Photography has been a constant in my life since I was nine years old when my mother first let me use her Voigtländer with a 35mm lens. That moment sparked a lifelong fascination with capturing the world through images, a pursuit that continues to define my work today.

For me, photography is more than a craft—it is a way of seeing, a way of connecting with the world on a deeper level. It exists at the intersection of art, storytelling, and presence, requiring both an intuitive and deliberate approach. It is as much about feeling as it is about composition; a search for fleeting moments that reveal something universal. Photography is, in essence, an act of translation—transforming the rhythm of life, the weight of history, and the impermanence of time into something tangible. I see it as a social, artistic, and almost spiritual practice—one that fosters observation, patience, and reverence for the world around us. Through my work, I seek not just to document but to distill meaning, to capture what is felt as much as what is seen.

LETS WORK TOGETHER

While my work is solidly anchored in the maritime world, my creative journey extends beyond the sea. Over the years, I have collaborated on projects in music, film, and European research initiatives, crafting visual narratives that explore sound, movement, and innovation in different contexts. Whether documenting the creative process of musicians, shaping the visual identity of cultural projects, or capturing the impact of scientific research, my approach remains the same—seeking depth, authenticity, and a sense of connection.
